This is not the first time that Ilhan Omar created animosity between Somalis. She was heavily involved in the conflict that took place in Las-anod. In December 2022, she visited Garowe, where she leaked information to some of the Somali leaders pertaining to a meeting between the President of Somaliland and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Congress, of which she was a member at that time. She was very persistent and urged the Somalian leaders to take proactive actions against Somaliland as soon as possible. A month after this, the Las-anod conflict broke out.

According to the claims, she then pushed Somali officials to act against Somaliland swiftly. This occurred while she served on the committee overseeing critical foreign policy matters in the Horn of Africa.

He links this to the Las Anod conflict that erupted a month later, killing hundreds of civilians and displacing tens of thousands. The proximity of the visit, the alleged urging of action, and the outbreak of violence has drawn scrutiny. Critics highlight the timing and her family ties to Somalia’s military past, calling it a potential betrayal of U.S. interests. The claims remain allegations with no response from Ilhan Omar or confirmation from federal authorities.

Her father served as a colonel in the Somali military during a period of significant conflict in the region. Combined with documented visits to Somalia and public positions supporting Somali territorial integrity, the new claims amplify questions about priorities.
